Former Florida assistant basketball coach accused of molesting multiple players

A former assistant boy’s basketball coach in the Miami area has been arrested on multiple counts connected with alleged molestation of multiple former players.

As reported by the NBC Miami and the Miami New Times, among other sources, former Hialeah Gardens High assistant basketball coach Javier Cuenca was charged with two counts each of lewd and lascivious conduct and lewd and lascivious molestation in connection with allegations from the families of multiple former players. He also faces a single charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for allegedly delivering a controlled substance to a teenager.

The allegations against Cuenca are explosive, with one anonymous family member giving full details of how the assistant coach allegedly coaxed former players into willingly letting him fondle them.

The following statements were all provided to NBC Miami in reference to Cuenca’s time as a Hialeah Gardens coach.

“Beware of this person who is like [a]wolf in sheep’s clothing.”
“It’s been sexual touching,” she said. “It’s been when they’re stretching, he’ll rub up against them, touch their testicles.”
“He would tell them that he was going give them a steroid to make them bigger and stronger and more athletic,” she said. “And he would tell them that in order to give them that steroid he had to test them.”
Police reports obtained by the NBC affiliate claim that the coach’s alleged acts of molestation began in 2012 and continued through 2014.

While multiple former students have made allegations of abuse against Cuenca, others spoke up in his defense when asked about the coach by Miami ABC affiliate WPLG.

“How is he going to do that in the weight room?” said one student. “That’s impossible for him to do that in the weight room. Those are lies.”
“He’s a great coach and a good person,” said one student.
“It’s crazy how this comes out of nowhere, but honestly, I don’t believe everything,” said student Mateo Agudelo.
