“The most surprising, as you can see from the tears in my eyes, is the announcement that was made (that my jersey will be retired),” Mutombo said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It’s the most shocking to me. … I didn’t know the Hawks were going to retire my jersey. I can’t believe it. It’s going to be a great day.”

Mutombo will become just the fourth Hawk to have his jersey hung up in the rafters of Philips Arena, joining Bob Pettit (No. 9), Lou Hudson (No. 23) and Dominique Wilkins (No. 21). Mutombo spent 1996 to 2001 with the Hawks, making four All-Star teams and earning Defensive Player of the Year twice.

“It’s a big honor,” Koonin said. “We have not done it for a lot of players. You talk about somebody with a career with several chapters in it and each one is a positive.”

Mutombo will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame with the 2015 class next week.
