Top hoops prospect arrested for assault, theft of iPhone

A top basketball prospect from North Carolina was arrested and charged with assaulting a citizen in order to steal their iPhone.

As reported by North Carolina ABC affiliate WCTI, among other outlets, New Bern High basketball star Rhysante’ Ellis was arrested and charged with assault and theft in connection with an incident that was reported to police on Monday. According to officers, Ellis and a second man, Tajeer Hicks, attacked Patrick Degrand, eventually taking his phone after a fracas between the three men.

Ellis, who competed for New Bern Storm on the AAU summer circuit, leads New Bern’s roster with an average of 19 points per game during the team’s 2-3 start. He has since been suspended from all team activities pending his trial, which is set to begin on January 9.

In the meantime, New Bern will try to make up for his talented scorer, who is a rapidly emerging talent in the Class of 2016.
