Tubby Smith’s First Hire at Memphis Makes Sense in Lil Penny

Tubby Smith was let go at Minnesota for who knows why and replaced by Rick Pitino. Well, Rick Pitino Jr., that is. Smith was 124-81 (.610) in six seasons at Minnesota. Smith won 20 games five times. He actually took the Gophers to the NCAA tourney in his last year. He was a good solid coach for the Golden Gophers, but he was fired.

He was ‘fired’ or let go at Kentucky even with a national championship ring ten years ago. He never lived up to the real Rick Pitino’s shoes at Kentucky.

So after being fired in Minnesota, Tubby took his resume with one National Championship to Lubbock, Texas to coach and rebuild at Texas Tech.

Now Tubby Smith is the new men’s basketball coach at Memphis, agreeing to a five-year, $15.45 million deal.

His first hire makes more sense than anything in his entire career. Tubby has hired Lil Penny Hardaway.

The former Nike spokesman, and toy-clone of Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Lil Penny joins Tubby’s Memphis coaching staff as a recruiter and scout. Not bad for a guy who hasn’t had a job in 15 years.

Tubby Smith and Memphis are expected to announce the hiring at a press conference on Monday. It seems like a perfect fit for the Toy who was really born at Memphis (back when it was Memphis State).

If you don’t remember Lil Penny here is a good throwback video of who he was….

Congrats to Tubby on the new hire, and congrats to Lil Penny on the job.

More details are pending.
